The fallout from the Ed Sheeran Loop Tour isn’t over yet. The singer-songwriter just added fuel to the fire by speaking out again at his Philadelphia concert. In his lengthy statement, Ed appeared emotional as he spoke about what has been happening since Macklemore was removed from the tour lineup. It has undoubtedly been one firestorm after another for The Shape of You singer as other acts from his tour dropped out. They made their stand known while Ed firmly tried to remain neutral. However, when the blowback became too loud, he made a statement on social media.
Unfortunately, Ed’s carefully worded IG post didn’t do him any favors online. Instead, it made it look like he was defending his position by saying removing Macklemore was not his decision and that he was trying to “build bridges” and not use his platform for politics. Unfortunately for Ed, many fans online pointed out that he has been quite political in the past, which just highlights his silence on this particular political issue.
It’s been a week and Ed addressed the controversy again in person at his first show since the mass artist exodus. However, his latest speech appears to have shifted the narrative again and, whether intentionally or not, it made Ed look like he was framing himself as the victim. And it’s not a good look.
Ed’s show at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia was his first since the controversy erupted. He opened the show alone without opening acts and his usual backing band, Beoga. Before he began the show, he told the crowd he wanted to talk about everything that happened in the past week.
At the start of the show, Ed asked if he could say a few words about what has been happening. He said that he has faced criticism in the past and has always been okay with that, but this time the backlash was about his character, not his music. Because of that, he felt the need to speak up.
The musician reiterated that he never wanted to be an activist musician (despite former actions speaking to the contrary). He maintained that he wanted his concerts to be a safe space for everyone, regardless of opinion (despite Macklemore being unable to share his opinion). He then described the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Ed spoke about both sides and essentially said that what happened in Israel on October 7 was horrific and what is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and disproportionate.
While that may seem fair, many fans pointed out that he is essentially still trying to toe the line and stay safely in the middle. He addressed the current situation more neutrally and expounded on the “what,” but didn’t talk about the “why.”
Despite him saying promoters should not have to pre-approve concert content, he still failed to fully address Macklemore’s removal and the many artists that followed suit. That is the crux of the problem. He addressed the issue but didn’t unpack the consequences of what happened. Alongside the political issue, the bigger debate is also whether commercial power is being used to silence political expression.
As if the lack of discussion about his previous tour acts wasn’t bad enough, the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter shifted the narrative to what has happened to him since the controversy broke. Whether he meant to or not, Ed made the conversation about how all of this has impacted him.
Fans were left asking why the person at the center of the controversy spent more time explaining the emotional toll on himself rather than addressing the artists who walked away because they believed they were being silenced.
Ed discussed how difficult it has been for him personally. So much so that he questioned whether he still wanted to be an artist. He talked about losing support and finding out who his real friends are during these hard times. He even praised the band he was able to put together on short notice for being brave enough to stand onstage with him even though the “world may hate them” for joining him.
All of this makes it seem like Ed is intentionally or unintentionally framing himself as a victim despite definitely having agency in his own career and tour. Macklemore said it himself when he admitted that he, Ed, and even Pink were not victims because they are coming from a position of wealth and power.
However, Ed’s statements made it appear that, in a way, he felt victimized. He even removed the B stage from the venue because he was “scared of what might happen if I stood in the middle.” Ironic because, figuratively, that’s where Ed appears to continue to stand.
By the end of the evening, Ed shared that it was one of the “worst weeks of his life.” He got very emotional about how this has all played out. And while his sincerity appears genuine, his reframing of the story and talking so much about what this has cost him does leave a bad taste in some fans’ mouths.
For a man who has made political statements in the past, by the end of the night, Ed was apologizing for talking about politics at all. He reiterated that he was there for the fans and for the music. And this take is leaving many fans divided.
Many in attendance praised his words and reaffirmed their support for the singer. Several others, though, feel that Ed just made things worse by making this issue about him when it’s much bigger than him. Many feel that he said so many things without really saying anything at all.
